Nico is a 4-year-old, house-trained, people-n’-dog-lovin’ beefcake of a pug with rolls for days and a heart even bigger than his belly. And that belly? He tipped the scale at nearly FORTY pounds when he arrived. Yep. F-O-R-T-Y. A few too many snackies, not enough movement, and over a year in rescue with no adoption interest left Nico a little rounder—and a little overlooked. Surrounded by younger, slimmer pugs, he never stood a chance. But we saw him. And now he’s here in Washington, where the air is cool, the trails are shaded, and the pug people are second to none. Whether it’s easy strolls, gentle hikes, or cheering from the sidelines, the PNW is the perfect place for this lovable loaf to feel better and get moving again. He’s already down to around 35 pounds and making great progress on Operation: Less Chunk, All Hunk. Here’s what we’ve learned since he arrived: Nico is incredibly loving and loyal—he absolutely adores his people. He’s great with other dogs and loves a calm, friendly pack. He’s house-trained and well-mannered around the house. However, he does struggle with being left alone. Nico has some separation anxiety and will howl if he feels abandoned. Because of this, apartments or homes with shared walls won’t be the best fit for him. And let’s talk about the obvious: Nico is a big boy. His adopter needs to be physically prepared to help hoist this hefty hunk when needed—like into a car, up stairs, or during vet visits. At 35 pounds, he’s no pocket pug, and lifting him takes a little muscle (and a lot of love). This isn’t a lightweight situation, literally—so we want to make sure his forever family is ready and able. Ideal home? Someone who works from home or has a flexible schedule—and most importantly, someone who’s willing to help Nico work through his anxiety, support his weight-loss journey, and love him for the sweet, sensitive snugglebug he is. He’s already stealing hearts—and he’s ready to be someone’s one-and-only, forever and ever.
